About us

Nienhuis Montessori was founded in 1929 by Albert Nienhuis, who collaborated with Maria Montessori to create products which reflected her vision of education. Children feel a natural drive to develop and need to be given the opportunity to do so freely. Nienhuis Montessori’s product range enables children to discover the world independently. We only use the best materials, created with care, commitment and attention to detail. Nienhuis combines skills with technology, and has been doing so for over 85 years. Educating people is a skill. In 1975, a distribution center was opened in the United States to focus on Montessori customers in North and South America. Nienhuis Montessori has been officially endorsed by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) for decades. It is world’s leading brand when it comes to Montessori materials. We works with specialists from within the field of education who share our ambition. In line with the Montessori vision, we develop materials which create a stimulating educational environment, in which the child always has a central position.

Connections with Maria Montessori

After the establishment of the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome, 1907, the news of the miracle children was quickly spread to Italy’s neighbouring countries and the rest of world. Interest in this new way of education spread to the Netherlands and a few Dutch early childhood educators set off for Rome to study at the international teacher training courses that Maria Montessori started in 1913. In 1914, the first group of Dutch children gathered in the home of Mrs J.J. Werker in The Hague, who had set up a small Montessori ‘Casa dei Bambini’. Soon other schools opened their doors in other parts of the country. With Montessori education increasingly finding groups of parents interested to have their children enjoy this new type of education, it was desirable to pool resources and knowledge, and coordinate the necessary lobbying with educational authorities. In 1917 these considerations led to the foundation of an official Dutch Montessori Society in order to become a resource for Dutch Montessorians and to liaise with Maria Montessori. Read more
