The Greek word ‘Cosmic’ means order and harmony in the world, and on a broader level, the universe. The opposite of ‘cosmic’ is chaos. Cosmic presupposes the concept that the entire universe collaborates in the still evolving creation of everything that is. So merely, through its existence, every element of nature performs a task in maintaining a balance in the universe.
The educational goal of Montessori elementary education is to develop a ‘global vision’ within the children. Montessori calls the path to this perspective, “Cosmic Education” - that, which develops in children, a sense of gratitude for the universe and their lives within it. Children tend to take for granted the world around them. That what they see in their world, has always been there. Cosmic Education leads to an understanding that even the most simple enhancements of their daily lives, like forks, paper or pencils for example, were at one point, created. Experiences are the elements for conceiving the universe: time, place and nature. This level of consciousness increases with age; older children really begin to understand these relations. Through their work and research, the children discover the many important contributions of others that today are so important in our daily lives. This helps them realize too, that they can and do make their own contributions to the world. The end result of Montessori Cosmic Education: That the child is conscious about its unique place in the universe.
